Profhilo in Hale: What It Is, How It Works and Who It Suits
Profhilo is one of the most requested treatments in my clinic, and also one of the most misunderstood. Patients often ask if it is "the same as filler" or "just another skin booster". It is neither. As an NHS GP and aesthetic doctor in Hale, I want to explain what Profhilo actually is, how the treatment technique differs from a standard injectable, and who tends to see the best results.

What Is Profhilo?
Profhilo is an injectable treatment made by the Italian pharmaceutical company IBSA. It contains a hybrid complex of high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, thermally stabilised rather than chemically crosslinked. That last detail matters clinically: most dermal fillers are crosslinked using BDDE to make them firm and structural, whereas Profhilo is not, which is why it spreads through the tissue rather than holding a shape.
The distinction worth remembering is this: Profhilo is not a filler and it is not a typical skin booster. It sits in its own category, sometimes called bio-remodelling, designed to improve the quality and tightness of the skin itself rather than adding volume or simply hydrating the surface.
How Does Profhilo Work?
Profhilo is injected using a specific pattern called the BAP technique, short for Bio Aesthetic Points, five points on each side of the face rather than the many small injections used for typical skin boosters. Once in the tissue, the hyaluronic acid disperses slowly over the following weeks, stimulating fibroblasts to increase their own production of collagen and elastin. The result is skin that feels firmer and tighter from within, rather than simply plumped or hydrated on the surface.
Profhilo does not add volume to the skin so much as it prompts the skin to rebuild its own structure.
This is also why Profhilo typically requires only two treatment sessions to see a full result, rather than the three session course often used for other regenerative injectables.
Profhilo vs Dermal Fillers vs Other Skin Boosters
Patients often want to know where Profhilo sits compared with dermal filler and with other skin boosters such as Redensity 1, NCTF or polynucleotides. All are injectable, but they are designed to do different jobs.

In practice, many of my patients combine two or three of these treatments as part of a bespoke plan. Filler restores lost structure, other skin boosters add glow and hydration, and Profhilo works on the underlying firmness and tightness of the skin itself.

What Does Treatment Involve?
Treatment starts with a full consultation, so I can assess your skin and understand your goals before recommending anything. Here is what a course typically looks like in my clinic.

Immediately after treatment, small raised bumps appear at each injection point. This is expected and is simply the product before it has had time to disperse, along with any mild swelling or bruising. Is Profhilo Safe?
Profhilo has a well established safety profile in published clinical data, in part because it is not crosslinked and is fully biodegradable. As with any injectable treatment, there are risks, including bruising, swelling and rarely infection or lumps, which is why choosing a doctor led clinic and having a proper consultation matters more than the product name alone. A thorough medical history helps identify anyone for whom the treatment would not be appropriate.
Who Is Profhilo For?
If You Have Crepey or Sagging Cheeks
Profhilo is particularly effective on the malar and submalar cheek area, where skin laxity often shows first, tightening the tissue rather than adding volume to it.
If Your Neck Shows Fine Lines and Laxity
The neck is one of the most commonly treated areas alongside the face, since thinner neck skin responds well to the tightening effect of bio-remodelling.
If You're in Perimenopause or Menopause
Falling oestrogen accelerates collagen loss, which is one reason many women notice skin laxity appearing faster than expected during this stage of life. Profhilo directly targets that loss of firmness.
If You Want to Complement Botox or Filler
Botox addresses movement and filler addresses volume, but neither improves the underlying quality of the skin. Profhilo is often added to a treatment plan specifically to close that gap.
The Bottom Line
Profhilo is not a replacement for dermal filler or anti-wrinkle injections, and it will not restore volume that has genuinely been lost. What it offers is something different: a way of tightening and improving the underlying quality of the skin, with a well established safety profile and results that build gradually rather than appearing overnight. As with any aesthetic treatment, the right choice depends on your individual skin, goals and medical history, which is why I always start with a full consultation rather than a one size fits all protocol.
