What is Medical Microneedling?

Medical microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that uses multiple tiny fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing process, promoting the production of collagen and elastin. It’s a highly effective treatment for improving skin texture, reducing fine lines, acne scars, enlarged pores, and overall skin tone. It’s also great for maintaining healthy skin.

How does Medical Microneedling work?

Microneedling works by creating microscopic channels in the skin, triggering a healing response that encourages new collagen formation. This process remodels the skin, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin

Why choose Microneedling with Exosomes?

The microchannels made by the microneedling device hugely enhance the absorption of topical treatments and this is where exosomes come into play. Exosomes are tiny, naturally occurring vesicles released by cells that carry signals and nutrients to promote healing, regeneration, and communication between cells. When paired with microneedling, exosomes penetrate deep into the skin, boosting the regenerative effects of the treatment.

This powerful combination amplifies collagen production, reduces inflammation, and speeds up healing, delivering faster and more visible results.

We only use high quality and scientifically backed products so we use ‘Purasomes’ which are an Italian made multi-patented formulation that combines ethically sourced organic bovine colostrum-derived exosomes with growth factors and other biologically active elements.

Each treatment contains 10 billion exosomes, a blend of 20 potent growth factors, including cytokines and signalling proteins that stimulate cellular activity and collagen production.

It also has Hyaluronic Acid to provide deep hydration and support skin structure. Amino Acids, Vitamins, Coenzymes, Antioxidants and Peptides.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?

1. Stimulates Collagen and Elastin Production

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger the skin’s natural healing response, boosting the production of collagen and elastin. This results in firmer, more youthful skin over time.

A famous 2008 study demonstrated that skin treated with four microneedling sessions, spaced one month apart, showed up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin six months after completing the treatment!

2. Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Increased collagen levels smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes, mouth, and forehead, making it a valuable anti-aging treatment.

3. Improves Acne Scars and Surgical Scarring

Microneedling helps remodel scar tissue by breaking down old collagen and stimulating new, organised collagen formation making it effective for acne scars and some surgical scars.

4. Minimises Pore Size

By tightening the surrounding skin and enhancing skin texture, microneedling can significantly reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.

5. Enhances Skin Tone and Texture

It evens out skin tone, softens rough texture, and gives a smoother, brighter complexion. It can also improve mild hyperpigmentation and sun damage.

6. Treats Stretch Marks and Skin Laxity

Microneedling is used off-face to treat stretch marks, especially on the abdomen, thighs, or breasts, and to improve mild skin laxity in areas like the neck or décolletage.

7. Safe for Most Skin Types

Unlike lasers or deep chemical peels, microneedling has a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and is generally safe for all skin types.

What to expect during your Microneedling treatment?

  • Before your appointment: You will be asked to complete an online medical form that Dr. Caroline will go through in person to make sure you are suitable for the treatment and that there are medical contraindications.

  • During your consultation: Dr. Caroline will go through your medical form in person and discuss your goals. She will then explain the treatment plan and address any concerns or questions that you may have. If you are medically suitable and you wish to proceed with the treatment, you will then be asked to read and sign a consent form.

  • During your Procedure: Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed prior to the treatment. Microneedling causes a light pressure with a gentle vibration, and a prickling sensation as the device moves across the skin. We can discuss the pros and cons of opting for numbing cream during your appointment but it is rarely required.

The device is moved methodically across the skin at varying speeds and depths, depending on the area being treated. Exosomes are applied during the treatment to boost the results and as a glide to help the device move smoothly across the treatment areas.

  • The entire session usually lasts about approximately 30 minutes.

  • Aftercare: You will be given detailed aftercare advice in both a physical and digit form. The treated area will be usually look red for approx 12 hours post-treatment.

  • We will always follow-up with you after your treatments to ensure your wellbeing and answer any questions that you may have.

How many Microneedling treatments are required?

We usually advise a series of 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart as an induction. The number of sessions will depend on your skin concerns and goals, which will be discussed during your consultation.

When will I start to see the results?

Results typically start to appear 4–6 weeks after your last induction session as new collagen forms. These results continue to improve over the following months.

People usually repeat microneedling 2-3 times a year to maintain results.

What is the aftercare advice for Microneedling?

Post-treatment, it’s important to avoid makeup, vigorous exercise, and sun exposure for at least 24–48 hours. Use gentle, hydrating skincare products and apply SPF daily. Avoid active ingredients like retinoids and exfoliants for 5–7 days.

Most people look a bit red (like sunburn) for the rest of the day and usually by the following day are fine to return to work/usual without it looking noticeable.

Why book Microneedling with a doctor?

Unfortunately aesthetics is still not regulated in the UK and not all microneedling devices, products and training programmes are created equal.

Dr. Caroline Warden only uses the Dermafocus Microneedling device which holds both CE and FDA approvals. This means that it meets stringent international safety and quality standards.

It uses only single use needles and incorporates an anti-backflow system to prevent contamination, upholding the highest standards of hygiene, which is absolutely crucial for patient safety.

Dr. Caroline also uses the highest quality products (Purosomes) to achieve the best results for our patients. Achieving a great outcome is really important, and we can only do this with the best equipment and the best products available.

Choosing a medically trained doctor ensures that your Microneedling treatment is performed with the highest standards of safety and precision. Dr. Caroline personalises each session to attend to your individual skin needs. If a patient has scarring in a specific area, this may be treated at a deeper depth (skin therapists are limited to the depth they can go).

It also goes without saying that Dr. Caroline is equipped and trained to complications and emergencies, to offer you the very highest level of care and expertise.

Medical Microneedling FAQ

  • Medical microneedling is a collagen-stimulating treatment that uses a precision device with tiny, sterile needles to create micro-channels in the skin.

These controlled micro-injuries trigger your skin’s natural healing response, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin. The result? Smoother, firmer, more luminous skin with improved texture and tone over time.

Unlike at-home dermarollers, medical microneedling is performed by a clinician using CE-marked, professional devices with adjustable depth and strict infection control.

  • At the clinic we take microneedling further by combining it with:

    • NCTF – a renowned mesotherapy cocktail containing hyaluronic acid plus a blend of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants to nourish and hydrate the skin.

    • Exosomes (Purosomes) – next-generation, cell-derived vesicles that carry signalling molecules and growth factors to support regeneration, repair and reduced inflammation.

During treatment, the micro-channels created by microneedling allow NCTF and Purosomes to penetrate deeper into the skin, maximising their regenerative benefits.

  • This combination treatment is designed to improve overall skin quality and can help with:

    • Fine lines and early wrinkles

    • Dull, tired or “flat” skin

    • Mild laxity and loss of firmness

    • Acne scarring and uneven texture

    • Enlarged pores

    • Pigmentation and sun damage (as part of a full plan)

    • Crepey skin on the face, neck and décolletage

It’s an ideal option for patients who want their skin to look healthier, brighter and more resilient, rather than an obvious “done” look.

  • Microneedling triggers a controlled wound-healing response and collagen remodelling. When we add NCTF and Purosomes:

    • NCTF provides deep hydration and a concentrated dose of skin nutrients, supporting fibroblasts and skin metabolism.

    • Exosomes (Purosomes) act as cellular messengers, helping to:

      • Reduce inflammation

      • Support repair processes

      • Improve texture and radiance

Together, they help your skin recover faster and remodel more effectively, enhancing the results of standard microneedling.

  • A typical appointment includes:

    1. Consultation

      • A full medical history and skin assessment to confirm suitability and design your treatment plan.

    2. Preparation

      • Skin is double-cleansed and prepped.

      • A topical numbing cream may be applied for comfort.

    3. Microneedling

      • A medical-grade microneedling device is passed over the skin at tailored depths depending on area and concern.

      • NCTF and/or Purosomes are layered onto the skin and worked in through the micro-channels.

      • You’ll leave with clear written aftercare instructions.

Procedure time is usually around 45 minutes depending on the number of areas treated.

  • Most patients describe the sensation as scratchy, prickly or warm, rather than painful.

  • Downtime is usually mild to moderate, and many people are back to normal activities the next day.

    You can expect:

    • Redness and warmth similar to mild sunburn for 12–24 hours

    • Possible light swelling

    • Skin may feel tight, dry or slightly rough as it heals

    • Occasional light flaking or peeling after a few days

Exosomes (Purosomes) often help the skin settle more quickly compared to traditional microneedling alone.

  • For best results, we typically recommend:

    • A course of 3–4 treatments, spaced approx 4 weeks apart

    • Followed by maintenance sessions every 6 months, depending on your skin and goals

Scarring, more advanced sun damage or long-standing texture issues may need a slightly longer course or combination with other modalities.

  • You’ll usually notice:

    • Improvements in texture, hydration and radiance over 3–6 weeks

    • Continued gradual changes in firmness and fine lines over several months as new collagen forms

Because this is a regenerative treatment, results build cumulatively over a course, rather than being instant.

  • In many cases, exosomes (Purosomes) can be particularly helpful for sensitive, reactive or rosacea-prone skin, because they support repair and help modulate inflammation.

However, every case is individual. During your consultation we will:

    • Review your rosacea history and triggers

    • Examine your current skin barrier

    • Decide whether to:

      • Start gently with shallower microneedling depths, or

      • Prep your skin first with skincare and barrier support before treatment

Active flares, broken skin or infection need to settle before any microneedling.

  • You may be advised to avoid treatment if you:

    • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

    • Have active acne, infection, cold sores or dermatitis on the treatment area

    • Have a history of keloid scarring or very poor wound healing

    • Are on certain medications (e.g. strong oral retinoids)

    • Have uncontrolled medical conditions that affect healing

A thorough medical screening is carried out before we treat.

  • To optimise results and minimise side effects, we usually advise:

    • Avoid strong active skincare (retinol, AHAs/BHAs, scrubs) on the area for 3–5 days before

    • Avoid blood-thinning supplements and anti-inflammatories where medically safe (check with your GP if unsure)

    • No sunbeds or intense sun exposure beforehand

    • Arrive with clean skin, free from makeup and fake tan

You’ll receive tailored preparation advice based on your skin and medications.

  • After treatment:

    • Avoid touching the area and do not apply makeup for at least 12–24 hours

    • Use only the gentle cleanser and soothing products recommended by your practitioner for the first few days

    • Avoid intense exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga for 24–48 hours

    • Do not use acids, retinoids or exfoliants until advised it is safe (usually 5–7 days)

    • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily and avoid deliberate tanning

If you notice increasing redness, pain, swelling or anything that concerns you, contact the clinic promptly.

  • At-home dermarollers:

    • Have fixed shallow needle depths

    • Cannot be properly sterilised between uses

    • Carry a higher risk of infection, scarring and pigment changes if overused or used incorrectly

Medical microneedling in a clinic setting:

    • Uses single-use sterile cartridges and professional devices

    • Allows precise adjustment of depth for different areas and indications

    • Is carried out by a trained medical professional with full infection-control procedures

    • Can be combined safely with advanced products like NCTF and exosomes (Purosomes) for enhanced results

For skin health and safety, deeper microneedling should always be performed in a medical environment.

  • Yes – it works beautifully as part of a wider, bespoke skin plan. It can be combined or sequenced with:

    • Anti-wrinkle injections

    • Dermal fillers and polynucleotides/skin boosters

    • Medical-grade skincare programmes

    • Chemical peels or LED therapy

    • Exosome-only or barrier-repair treatments for more sensitive skins

Your plan will be tailored around your priorities, downtime and budget.
