Why does the jawline become softer with age?
Most people notice it first in a photograph taken from the side. The line between face and neck that used to be crisp has gone soft. The lower face looks a little heavier. There may be the beginnings of a jowl either side of the chin, or a small hollow just in front of it.
Loss of jawline definition is rarely caused by one thing. Bone, fat, ligaments, skin and muscle all change at once, and two people who both say "I've lost my jawline" can need entirely different treatments. At my clinic in Hale, near Altrincham, I assess the whole lower face before recommending anything. The aim is not an exaggerated, sharp jaw. It is to restore balance, proportion and subtle definition while keeping your face recognisably yours.

What causes loss of jawline definition?
Layered on top are the accelerators: genetics and natural facial shape, menopause, significant or rapid weight loss, sun damage and smoking. The anatomy of how the face changes shape is explained in the Triangle of Youth.
Is a softer jawline the same as jowls?
Not necessarily. A jowl is soft tissue that has descended below the natural border of the jaw. Loss of definition can happen before any jowl exists: someone with good skin and minimal descent may simply have an under-projected chin, a small pre-jowl hollow or a naturally soft mandibular angle. Someone else may have excellent bone structure but increasing laxity and descent. They look similar in the mirror. The treatment is completely different.

Can weight loss affect the jawline?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people book. Significant weight loss, whether through diet, surgery or GLP-1 medication such as Mounjaro, removes facial fat from every compartment. Cheeks flatten, the lower face loses its support and skin that was stretched over fullness now drapes over the jaw. So-called Mounjaro face is volume loss revealed quickly, not a unique condition caused by the drug. How do I assess the jawline?
I look at the lower face from the front, both sides and below, at rest and when you speak and smile. Six things decide the plan.
The jawline is usually the last place I inject, not the first. Chin, cheek and skin decide what the jaw needs.
Which treatments improve jawline definition?
Radiesse for jawline definition
Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite biostimulator whose firmness makes it well suited to precise structure along the chin and mandibular border. Radiesse (+) was the first injectable to receive FDA approval specifically for improving loss of jawline contour. In the pivotal randomised trial, 75.6% of treated patients had a clinically meaningful improvement on the Merz Jawline Assessment Scale at 12 weeks, against 8.8% of untreated controls, and the long-term follow-up of 175 patients found response rates of 78.7% at 24 weeks and 62.9% at 48 weeks. The authors concluded that treatment produced
"clinically meaningful and long-lasting improvements in jawline contour."

I consider it for loss of contour along the jaw, reduced chin support, a pre-jowl hollow or a soft mandibular angle, in a lower face that is not already broad or heavy. Dermal filler
Hyaluronic acid filler is useful where there is a specific structural deficit at the chin, pre-jowl area, mandibular border or angle, and where reversibility matters. The aim is to restore continuity and proportion, not to build a bigger jaw. Filler does not lift; where laxity or descent is the main problem, repeated filler makes the lower face heavier. Sculptra
Sculptra rebuilds collagen gradually rather than creating an immediate contour. It is the better choice where a softer jawline is part of broader facial deflation, particularly after weight loss or in the years around menopause, because restoring the cheek and lateral face lifts the lower face indirectly. Hyperdilute Radiesse
Diluting Radiesse shifts its effect from structure to collagen stimulation and skin quality. It suits a lower face and neck where the problem is thinning, crepiness and early laxity rather than a missing contour. It improves how the skin behaves; it does not reposition descended tissue and is not an injectable facelift. Read my hyperdilute Radiesse page.
Anti-wrinkle injections for the platysma
In selected patients, relaxing the platysma reduces its downward pull on the jaw and softens neck bands, an approach sometimes called the Nefertiti lift online. The effect is subtle and only worthwhile where muscle activity is contributing. It will not replace volume, remove jowls or tighten loose skin. Skin treatments
Polynucleotides, skin boosters, microneedling with exosomes and medical-grade skincare improve the skin over the jawline: crepiness, firmness, hydration and resilience. Useful alongside structural treatment, and sometimes enough on their own in early change, but they do not move tissue that has descended.
Which treatment for which problem?
Why more filler is not the answer
The biggest shift in aesthetics over the last few years has been recognising that an ageing face is not a collection of empty spaces waiting to be filled. Repeated volume around the lower face produces width, heaviness and distorted proportions, and it is most damaging in people who already have a naturally broad or heavy jaw. I would rather recommend less, something different, or nothing than add product where it will not look natural. Can jawline treatment get rid of jowls?
It can soften early jowling by fixing what exaggerates it: a small chin, a pre-jowl hollow, lost cheek support, collagen loss or platysmal pull. It cannot remove a jowl that is established, and once there is real excess skin no injectable will reproduce what a facelift does, which is physically reposition the tissue. If that is where you are, I will say so at consultation and point you towards a surgical opinion rather than a treatment plan that disappoints.
A jawline should suit your age, your bone structure and your face. The goal is the jaw you had, not the jaw you saw on someone else.
How much does jawline treatment cost in Hale and Altrincham?
A new-patient consultation is £75, redeemable against treatment. Jawline work is priced by product and syringe rather than as a fixed package, because the amount depends on your anatomy: chin and pre-jowl support may need one syringe of Radiesse or filler, a full jawline with angle definition more. Where Sculptra is the right route, it is priced per vial over two or three sessions. Current prices are on the price list, and I will give you a full plan cost at consultation.
Your consultation
I assess chin projection, jawline structure, the pre-jowl area, cheek and lateral support, skin quality and laxity, platysma activity, neck and lower-face proportions, previous treatment and your medical history. You do not need to know whether you need Radiesse, Sculptra, filler or something else before you come. The plan follows the anatomy. Every consultation and treatment is carried out by me personally, an NHS GP and aesthetic doctor, and there is no pressure to proceed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best treatment for a less defined jawline?
There is no single best. A structural deficit responds to Radiesse or filler, broad volume loss to Sculptra, declining skin to a regenerative approach, and significant loose skin to surgery. The consultation works out which you have.
Is Radiesse or filler better for the jawline?
Radiesse is firmer and stimulates collagen, so it suits contour and support. Hyaluronic acid filler is softer and reversible, so it suits precise corrections and first-time patients. The right one depends on your tissue and the correction needed.
Can Sculptra define my jawline?
Indirectly. It restores support in the cheeks and lateral face, which lifts the lower face. It does not create the immediate, precise contour of a structural filler.
Can anti-wrinkle injections sharpen my jawline?
Subtly, in patients where platysma pull is contributing. They will not correct a structural deficit, established jowls or loose skin.
Can filler get rid of jowls?
Strategic support at the chin or pre-jowl hollow can reduce the appearance of early jowls. Filling the jowl itself is never the aim.
Why has my jawline disappeared as I've got older?
Bone, fat, ligaments, skin and muscle all change, and it is nearly always a combination rather than one cause.
Does menopause affect the jawline?
Yes. Falling oestrogen accelerates collagen loss and changes fat distribution, so many women notice the lower face changing within a few years of menopause.
Does weight loss cause jowls?
It can reveal or exaggerate them by removing the fat that was supporting the lower face and leaving skin to drape.
Will jawline filler make my face look wider?
It can, if too much is used or the face is already broad. Patient selection and restraint matter more than syringe count.
How many syringes will I need?
There is no standard amount. Chin and pre-jowl support may take one; a full jawline may take more. This is planned individually at consultation.
Can you restore my old jawline without surgery?
In early change, often a meaningful improvement. With significant laxity or established jowls, injectables have limits and surgery may be the honest answer.
How long do jawline results last?
Radiesse contour typically lasts around a year, with most patients in the long-term trial still improved at 48 weeks. Filler lasts nine to eighteen months depending on product. Sculptra results build over months and last two years or more.
